What a night at Milton Keynes Theatre! Dirty Dancing: The Classic Story on Stage delivered a high-energy, nostalgic hit of pure entertainment that had the entire auditorium buzzing from the very first beat. Originally the beloved 1987 smash-hit film written by screenwriter and producer Eleanor Bergstein, she adapted her own semi-autobiographical story into a stage phenomenon back in 2004. Decades later, it remains an absolute must-get ticket.
The heart of the story rests on the shoulders of Frances "Baby" Houseman, portrayed brilliantly by Charlie Varlet. Making her tour debut, Varlet captures Baby's journey with warmth and precise comedic timing. Watching her transform from a naive, meek daughter vacationing with her family into a bold, confident young woman and dancer is fantastic to watch.
Speaking of the family, the Housemans feel like a genuine, well-rounded unit. Lynden Edwards brings steady gravity to Dr. Jake Houseman, Taryn Sudding gives a lovely depth to Marjorie, and India Chadwick delivers a hilarious turn as Baby’s sister Lisa (with her iconic, wonderfully awkward "Hula" performance getting some of the biggest laughs of the night).
Set in the summer of 1963 at Kellerman’s Resort in the Catskills, the stage comes alive the second the music strikes up. The audience erupted with cheers the moment Joel Benjamin stepped out as Johnny Castle. Benjamin wins the crowd over immediately—he carries that swagger and brooding charisma effortlessly, while bringing incredible precision to the iconic choreography.
What makes this production unique is that it isn't a traditional musical where the lead characters randomly break into song to express their feelings. Instead, the narrative stays true to the film's tone while being powered by a phenomenal live band right on stage. Lead vocalists like Elizabeth (Mimi Rodrigues-Alves) and Tito Suarez (Robert Grose) take us through the scenes with huge live vocals, complemented by track audio for the big dance arrangements.
The stage show fits in around 20 additional songs alongside every favorite from the movie soundtrack. Even when "She’s Like the Wind" is presented as a lush instrumental piece, it lands perfectly. The inclusion of "Save the Last Dance for Me" is an especially welcome addition—a track Bergstein originally wanted for the 1987 film that finally found its proper home on stage.
The storyline closely follows the original film plot: idealist Baby gets drawn into the secretive, passionate world of Kellerman's working-class resort staff after discovering Johnny's original dance partner, Penny Johnson (danced with astonishing athleticism by Ellie Fergusson), needs help. As Baby steps in to learn the routines, the relationship between Baby and Johnny grows with genuine, believable chemistry.
You’ll smile, cheer, and find yourself listening out for those iconic lines you know by heart. When Johnny utters "Nobody puts Baby in the corner," it prompts a massive roar from the crowd. Everything builds toward that famous finale lift, bringing the show to a triumphant crescendo as Baby flies into the air to "(I've Had) The Time of My Life".
The entire cast brings immense energy to these extended, floor-shaking dance numbers. If you get the chance this week, grab a ticket and go have the time of your life!

Dirty Dancing – The Classic Story On Stage originally opened at London’s Aldwych Theatre in 2006 with a record-breaking advance of £15 million, making it the fastest-ever selling show in West End theatre history. The production became the longest-running show in the history of the Aldwych
Theatre and played to over 2 million people during its triumphant 5-year run.
