Milton Keynes community supports charity relaunch to unveil The Shelter MK

This half-term, The Bus Shelter MK relaunches as The Shelter MK at Midsummer Place – bringing a life-size replica sleeping pod to the heart of the city where the charity first launched its double-decker bus in 2017

From Saturday 25 October to Sunday 2 November, The Shelter MK team will bring in a replica sleeping pod, based opposite Waterstones and The Horizon Radio booth at Midsummer Place. Visitors will be able to look inside the life-sized model ‘bedroom’, similar to the rooms that the charity offers people experiencing homelessness at its permanent George House location in Stantonbury.

On Tuesday 28 October at 10am, The Shelter MK will officially launch the evolved charity with a small ceremony at the bandstand in Midsummer Place to unveil its new name, brand image and core message: Hope. Stability. Future. Everyone is invited to attend.

Pam Williams, Chair of The Shelter MK, said: “This is an exciting chapter in our transition from The Bus Shelter MK. We’re excited to change our name to The Shelter MK and bring our charity to the forefront of people’s minds with a new look and feel that has the people we support at its heart.

“The journey from our beloved bus to converted shipping containers at George House, Stantonbury, is a powerful story and we’re excited to share this with the public during half term thanks to a beautifully produced video from students at MK College.”

MK College media production students have been led by tutor Luke Sheehan. He said: “Our students have been so excited to be involved with such a worthwhile project. They’ve come up with some great ideas, and we’ll all be proud to see their work at Midsummer Place and used by the charity afterwards.”

It costs The Shelter MK £300,000 a year to run and it relies solely on the support and generosity of the public, and again Midsummer Place has pledged to support the charity.

Kirsty McGiff, Midsummer Place Marketing Manager and supporter of both launches for the charity, said: “The launch of The Bus Shelter MK was a proud moment for myself and Midsummer Place and we’re truly honoured to support this wonderful charity once again as they transition to become The Shelter MK.”

Where it started:

In 2017, The Bus Shelter MK was launched in Midsummer Place with the unveiling of a former tour bus - used by singer Robbie Williams – that became the charity’s accommodation for street homeless people. That launch captured the imagination of Milton Keynes, raising more than £40,000 in the first six months through community donations and the shopping centre’s financial support.

When Covid struck in 2020, the bus had to be retired, and the charity instead transformed shipping containers into sleeping pods and a living space at their George House shelter in Stantonbury.

Since opening, The Bus Shelter MK has provided a temporary home to more than 300 guests across George House and 21 move-on beds, offering not just somewhere to sleep but the essentials that help people take steps forward: hot meals, showers, clean clothes, a safe space to rest and recover, and one-to-one support to get back into work and their own home.

Residents are known as ‘guests’, and they have described the pods as “the difference between hell and heaven” and “somewhere to put my head and call home.” The Bus Shelter MK has transformed the lives of hundreds of people.

One former guest said: “I really want to come back to George House as a volunteer. The people that get taken in are often broken apart and their lives torn to shreds. I’ve spoken to individuals there when I’ve been back for Christmas and BBQs and said, ‘You’re in the right place. These ‘mums’ in here will help you.”

Local agency, Yellowyoyo, worked with The Shelter MK team and guests to develop the new name and Hope. Stability. Future. strapline, while the charity’s new storytelling style has been developed by local brand consultant, Natalie Morten-Spencer, who spent a week at George House listening to guests and staff.

The message for the relaunch is “No more bus. Even more heart.” The charity says this reflects the move to The Shelter MK and return to Midsummer Place. It shows the spirit of the MK community as well as the passion of the team at The Shelter MK and the guests themselves.

St Mark’s Meals is a community-driven charity based in Milton Keynes, dedicated to combating child hunger by providing meal kits to children and families in need. Established in 2019 by St Mark’s Church, the initiative was born out of a desire to address the alarming number of children arriving at school hungry, often without having eaten since the previous day's school lunch.

How It Works

The charity distributes meal kit boxes to over 100 schools, children's centres, and community hubs across Milton Keynes. These boxes contain all the ingredients needed to prepare a nutritious, child-friendly meal, along with a recipe card and engaging activities for children. The meals are designed to be simple to prepare, catering to various dietary needs, including vegetarian, gluten-free, and options that require minimal cooking facilities.

The system operates on a trust-based model, allowing school staff and community workers to distribute the boxes to children and families in need, ensuring that no child goes to bed hungry.

Impact and Reach

Since its inception, St Mark’s Meals has made a significant impact in the community. In the past year alone, the charity has provided over 6,000 meal boxes, equating to approximately 24,000 meals for children and their families. The initiative has expanded its reach through the "Meals Network," offering resources and guidance to other communities across the UK interested in replicating the model.

Get Involved

Ride High is a registered charity based in Milton Keynes, dedicated to transforming the lives of disadvantaged children and young people aged 8–17 across Buckinghamshire, Bedfordshire, and Northamptonshire. Established in 2008 by Rachel Medill MBE, Ride High uses horses as a powerful tool to build confidence, resilience, and life skills in young people facing significant challenges, including poverty, neglect, abuse, and poor mental health.

What They Do

Ride High offers a structured, long-term programme where participants engage in learning to ride and care for horses, alongside clubroom activities that promote teamwork, responsibility, and personal development. Each week, around 120 children attend sessions that last between three to twelve months, depending on individual needs. The programme is designed to provide a safe, supportive environment where young people can build trust, develop new skills, and experience a sense of achievement.

The Ride High Equestrian Centre, situated in 37 acres of countryside in Loughton, Milton Keynes, serves as both the charity's base and a riding school open to the public. All profits from the riding school support the charitable work of Ride High, ensuring the sustainability of its programmes. The centre offers riding lessons, livery services, school holiday activities, and hacking, providing opportunities for the wider community to engage with and support the charity's mission.

Abuse doesn’t discriminate, but resources do — and MK ACT strives to reach people who might otherwise get missed: those from migrant or minority communities, those facing language, financial or cultural barriers. The service offers female support workers on request, works to make sure ethnic minority women are heard, tailors programmes to fit people’s backgrounds, and ensures support is safe, confidential, and culturally aware. For those with few resources, MK ACT helps with essential services, safety planning, sometimes practical aid, so people can begin rebuilding their lives.

Milton Keynes Community Foundation is a grant-making charity dedicated to creating a fairer community across Milton Keynes. They focus on sending funding where it’s needed most, especially supporting vulnerable, isolated, and disadvantaged people. Local projects—from grassroots initiatives to larger charities—benefit from their expertise, endowment, and targeted grant programmes.

What they do and how they help our community

They run a variety of grant programmes and rent subsidies for voluntary, community and cultural organisations. These help small groups, neighbourhood schemes and charities get the resources they need.

In 2024, they awarded nearly £891,000 in grants plus over £1.1 million in rent subsidies, supporting more than 100 organisations across Milton Keynes.

They also lead a “Funding Fairness” mission—ensuring all people are helped fairly, including those from diverse, under-represented or disadvantaged backgrounds.

A recent example: the Homeless Support Fund, a partnership with MyMiltonKeynes, helps rough sleepers and people without stable housing via grants for housing, skills, education and rehab.

How it impacts those in Milton Keynes who need it most
For people in our city who face hardship—due to poverty, homelessness, isolation, or lack of opportunity—the Foundation fills vital gaps. Organisations supported by MK Community Foundation often provide food, shelter, caring services, education, mental health or youth programmes. Because the Foundation funds many smaller groups, help reaches right into neighbourhoods. This is crucial for people from diverse backgrounds who may not be served by larger charities or public services.

How listeners can support or volunteer

Donate or become a Friend: Becoming a “Friend” through regular giving helps deliver steady support via pooled funds like the Cost of Living Fund. Even small donations make a big difference when pooled together.

Apply for or spread word about grants: If you run a community group or know one, MK Community Foundation makes it possible to apply for funding.

Volunteer: Roles include Ambassador, Mentor, Panel Member, Vital Signs researcher, Trustees, or administrative support. Use your skills to help shape decisions, support charities, or help capacity building.

Corporate involvement: Businesses can support via pro bono work, sponsoring projects, donating or encouraging staff volunteering. MK Community Foundation runs a Capacity Building programme that matches corporate skills with community needs.

MK Community Foundation is a vital link between generosity and action in Milton Keynes. Together, our listeners can help ensure that no one is left behind in our city.

Willen Hospice has been an essential part of Milton Keynes life for more than 40 years, offering compassionate care completely free of charge to adults facing life-limiting illness, their loved ones and those nearing end of life. Based at Willen Village but reaching into surrounding areas, the Hospice provides specialist medical, emotional, spiritual and practical care, whether in its In-Patient Unit, via its Willen at Home team, or through its Therapeutic & Wellbeing services.

For many in our local community—especially those who might be disadvantaged, isolated, or from diverse backgrounds—Willen Hospice offers a safe, understanding place. Through its 24-hour advice line, specialist palliative care nurses, support for carers, young people’s bereavement help, counselling, and social care, the Hospice ensures that no one has to face the most difficult moments alone. It works with GPs, hospitals, community nursing and social care services to make sure people receive care where they need it—often at home, in surroundings they know.

But running all of this costs a lot. Willen Hospice must raise around £8.7 million each year to continue delivering its services, because NHS funding covers only a fraction. To sustain its work, the Hospice depends on donations, fundraising events, retail operations, shops, and the energy and kindness of volunteers.

If you or listeners want to get involved, here’s how:

Donate: Whether it’s a one-off gift, regular giving, legacy giving, or a donation in memory of someone special, every contribution helps.

Volunteering: Many roles available – in the In-Patient Unit supporting patients, in reception, admin, gardening, in shops, or helping at events. You can give a few hours a week, or help more irregularly. Everyone is welcome.

Fundraise: Join or start a community event – like challenges, walks, sponsored runs, Midnight Moo – or support shop-events.

Corporate support: Businesses can contribute via team volunteering, sponsorships or workplace fundraising.

Willen Hospice makes a real difference here in Milton Keynes. By offering comfort, dignity and care when it matters most, it brings our community together. Be part of that difference.
